    Hidden features

The game offers various hidden bonuses and treasures. I've played different versions of OutZone, and i've noticed some features only appear with some versions (which is also true for some ennemies). The tips i'll explain in this page cover the emulated version.

There are other tips i know but i've never been able to fully understand. Any help on these would be appreciated. Here are some i've experienced :

Mysterious Easter Egg #1 : FlyingShark planes squadron

    - at some point of the game, it's possible to have a squadron of FlyingShark planes helping (i've forgotten the exact location, but i managed to get the squadron by forcing my way through cannons or small trees while firing the 3-Way shot)
The Outzone board i own is obviously a bootleg, as it shows from several gameplay variations. Anyway, be it on my board or on any emulation Outzone version, i've never been able to identify the place where the easter egg will occur. When i played in an arcade, i remember i located the spot and i had different technics to try and get that squadron think working. Never new what was the *actual* technic, but it seemed to work "almost well" when forcing my way through the cannon and bushes.
When unlocked, the squadron would fly around the player in an "V" (or reversed "V"?) formation, each plane shooting a single straighforward shot. Ennemies shots would destroy the planes, so the squadron would not last very long.

Mysterious Easter Egg #2 : Truxton ship

    - at another unlocated point, it's possible to have a Truxton ship following the player and shooting it's 3 way shot along with the player.
I barely remember the ship comes at one of the huge gates spot, but i'm not sure about that. I also barely remember i may have unlocked it under emulation, not sure either (and if that was the case, why wouldn't i make a screenshot???)
No idea what should be done to achieve this...

Mysterious Easter Egg #3 : High speed cars

    - at several locations, cars may cross the screen at high speed, giving lots of points when destroyed (and that's actually a Toaplan classic that can be found in a few more of their games).
What should be done to make those car appear is unknown. I'm pretty sure i've already got this under emulation. The reason why i would'nt make a screenshot of it is then obvious : it's a fast and surprising easter egg!

    Hidden 5000 points bonuses :

In the metal mazes of level 3, check out this area. There's an hidden 5000 points bonus available simply by walking into the dead-end on the left.
Just walk until you reach the point where the 5000 is displayed on the right picture, and you get the bonus.
I've noticed such hidden bonuses in other areas within this levels, but they're apparently not present in the emulated version.

    The "Pipiru" mystery unveiled!

Months ago, i've finally received an explanation about one of the hidden features in the game i called "the pipi mystery".
I must apologize to the person who gave me the information, though, as it was long ago, and i lost his messages, so i cannot credit him on this page.
Anyway, here are the details about this easter egg.
So what is it all about? In level 1, you can find a hidden creature in the rocks near the red cannons; and have it float around in the screen. If you manage to take it out to the end of that level, bingo, you'll get a 30000 points reward.
How to get the creature? In the first half of level 1, opposite to the red cannon on the right, you'll see 2 holes in the rocks (See picture). At that point, you must be equiped with the 3 way shot to unlock the easter egg.
Aim at the smallest of the 2 holes with the left beam of you 3 shot, and you'll see a "pipi" indication appearing.
Keep shooting until a large purple creature (it's Toaplan mascot "Pipiru"!:) pops out of the rocks

Pipiru is harmless and won't damage the ennemies either.
It will just float around all over the screen, and it's vulnerable to your shots.
After a few shots, it will reduce and start bouncing around, then eventually explode.
Now, it *very* difficult to keep that buddy alive for a long time, since most of your shots will affect him. Well, that's what you'll have to do anyway if you want the 30000 points reward, since it is required to take him to the end of the level...
As for me, i'had never found any use to this little guy before i was informed about that end-of-level trick. Since then, i've tried a couple of times to actually bring him to the end. So hard i've finally abandonned the idea! :)

Quoting Carl-Henrik Skarstedt, from toaplan.com : "Regarding the 'pipi' creature, I think the "pipi" text is a representation of the sound the creature makes. It is in fact the Toaplan mascot and it flies around the BH-99 spaceship in the foresty/blue-rock level in Zero Wing. I saw it when I had a larger screen and changed the sprite priorites to always be above the layers :) I have a feeling there is a secret way of getting to this guy in most toaplan games from zero wing/outzone and up."

Reading this, it became clear to me that i actually already saw this little guy in some other Toaplan production, although i can't remember where and when it was...
